Our health insurance plans

Health insurance designed with New Zealanders in mind

Whether you're after health insurance to cover major medical expenses and specialist consultations, or everyday cover for those day-to-day medical expenses, Southern Cross Health Insurance is here to help.

We have a range of health insurance plans and wellbeing modules that offer different benefits. You can also add family members to your health insurance policy and protect your whole family. Our child rates apply up to 21 years old, and we offer discounts for larger families too.


Shared day-to-day health plan

HealthEssentials

HealthEssentials is a shared day-to-day health cover plan to help you actively manage
your health:

  • This plan covers up to 75% of the costs incurred for eligible day-to-day healthcare services. Policy terms, conditions and exclusions apply, including a 3-month stand-down period for dental care and eye care benefits*
  • Cover includes GP and nurse services, dental, prescription glasses, physiotherapy and more


Surgical and healthcare plans

Wellbeing One

Wellbeing One is a surgical and healthcare plan that includes cover (subject to policy terms and conditions*) for:

  • Specialist consultations within 6 months of related eligible cancer treatment or surgical treatment
  • Diagnostic imaging and tests within 6 months of related eligible cancer treatment or surgical treatment
  • Cancer treatment
  • Surgical treatment
  • Recovery services within 6 months of related eligible cancer treatment or surgical treatment
  • Support services
  • And more

We’ll cover either the actual charges or the reasonable charges incurred for an eligible healthcare service, up to the policy limits and subject to any excess. Eligibility criteria may apply and some healthcare services must be performed by an Affiliated Provider.


Wellbeing Two

Wellbeing Two is a surgical and healthcare plan which includes cover (subject to policy terms and conditions*) for:

  • Specialist consultations at any time
  • Diagnostic imaging and tests at any time
  • Cancer treatment
  • Surgical treatment
  • Recovery services within 6 months of related eligible cancer treatment or surgical treatment
  • Support services
  • Obstetrics allowance (after one year of continuous cover)
  • Laboratory tests
  • And more

We’ll cover either the actual charges or the reasonable charges incurred for an eligible healthcare service, up to the policy limits and subject to any excess. Eligibility criteria may apply and some healthcare services must be performed by an Affiliated Provider.


UltraCare and UltraCare 400

UltraCare and UltraCare 400 are surgical and healthcare plans for those who want the highest level of cover. They include cover (subject to policy terms and conditions*) for:

  • Qualifying pre-existing conditions after 3 years of continuous cover (except for cover under Cancer Cover Plus)
  • Day-to-day healthcare services (e.g. GP appointments)
  • Flexibility to choose a health services provider outside of our Affiliated Provider network
  • Specialist consultations at any time
  • Diagnostic imaging and tests at any time
  • Cancer treatment
  • Surgical treatment
  • Recovery and support services
  • Mental health consultations
  • Obstetrics allowance (after one year of continuous cover)
  • And more

The UltraCare 400 plan provides the same cover as the UltraCare base plan, with extra cover for prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses, prescription contact lenses and dental services.

may apply.



Shared cover surgical and healthcare plans

We have two shared cover plans: KiwiCare and RegularCare. Shared cover means you and Southern Cross each pay some of the costs for the healthcare services you receive.

KiwiCare

KiwiCare covers up to 80% of the actual charges incurred for eligible healthcare services (up to the policy limits and subject to any excess*), including:

  • Specialist consultations at any time
  • Diagnostic imaging and tests at any time
  • Cancer treatment
  • Surgical treatment
  • Recovery services within 6 months of related eligible cancer treatment or surgical treatment
  • Support services
  • And more

Policy terms and conditions apply*, including eligibility criteria. Some healthcare services must be performed by an Affiliated Provider.


RegularCare

RegularCare covers up to 80% of the actual charges incurred for eligible healthcare and day-to-day services (up to the policy limits and subject to any excess*), including:

  • Specialist consultations at any time
  • Diagnostic imaging and tests at any time
  • Cancer treatment
  • Surgical treatment
  • Recovery services within 6 months of related eligible cancer treatment or surgical treatment
  • Support services
  • GP visits, prescriptions, physiotherapy, and hearing tests
  • And more

Additional cancer support

Cancer Cover Plus can be added to your plan as an upgrade of the chemotherapy for cancer cover under your base plan. This includes cover for both Pharmac approved chemotherapy drugs and chemotherapy drugs that are not Pharmac approved but are Medsafe-indicated for treatment of the cancer you have been diagnosed with.

Cancer Cover Plus is fully underwritten (pre-existing condition concessions do not apply), subject to eligibility criteria and is only available to purchase where all members on a policy are under 60 years old.


Wellbeing modules

Wellbeing modules can be added to the Wellbeing plans to access cover for everyday healthcare services. See the available Wellbeing modules on Wellbeing One and Wellbeing Two.

Extra cover options

Cancer Assist and Critical Illness plans can also be purchased with your health insurance plan (excluding HealthEssentials). Policy terms and conditions, including eligibility criteria apply. Find out more on the plan page for each of these plans.
