Asoiva’s story

“Bowel cancer is not selective.”

Asoiva was living a healthy life before her bowel cancer diagnosis, but prompt treatment via her Southern Cross policy made all the difference.

Asoiva never expected to be diagnosed with bowel cancer. At 42, she was active, ate well, and didn’t drink or smoke, so when she noticed blood in her stools, she knew something wasn’t right. Despite her GP’s initial reassurance and clear test results, she was referred to a specialist, where a sigmoidoscopy revealed a tumour.

With cancer, time is crucial, and Asoiva’s health insurance policy made all the difference. Within a week, she had a CT scan and was scheduled for surgery. Her husband John recalls the speed that Asoiva received treatment, which was vital for her recovery. “If we were two months later, we wouldn’t be talking like we are now,” he says. The quick response and expert care she received helped save Asoiva’s life.

Asoiva underwent successful surgery at Wellington’s Southern Cross Hospital, followed by chemotherapy. Despite the challenges, she found strength in taking each day as it came. With over $46,000 in medical bills covered by Southern Cross Health Insurance, both Asoiva and John felt supported throughout the journey. Asoiva reflects, “You’ve only got one shot at life, so make the most of it.”
