Star Wayfarer Award | Jen Southan, ORIX New Zealand
The Star Wayfarer Award recognised an individual who has made a meaningful contribution to improving health and wellbeing within their workplace. They inspire and initiate positive effect, regardless of their position – this person fuels the crew’s momentum and enhances motivation.
Inspiration: Jen Southan drives positive change, leads by example, and brings colleagues at all levels on the journey with her. Her team said Jen’s passion and determination make her truly special.
Action: Jen has driven impactful wellbeing initiatives that have significantly enhanced the culture at ORIX. A stand-out progamme, Steptember, saw over half of staff participating, collectively walking 11 million steps, encouraging physical wellbeing while fostering community and inclusion.
Challenges: The need to shift the cultural mindset of ORIX’s older demographic which made it difficult to promote open conversations about mental health. Additionally, being part of a conservative Japanese global organisation made it challenging to balance the needs of diverse stakeholders while demonstrating the value of a wellbeing programme.
Impact: Engagement metrics across the board are up. Peer recognition through Values Awards has increased 76%; attendance at functions surged from 60% to 87%; usage of EAP has risen to 82% and employee attrition is at an all-time low.
