Expert speakers

Morning

Nigel Latta BeingWell conference 2018Nigel Latta - Keynote Speaker
Maintaining stone-aged brains in smart phone times

Nigel’s varied and colourful career includes a brief episode as a busker in the 80s, to over two decades working as a clinical psychologist, author, speaker and more recently, a documentary maker. His experience working as a psychologist with a wide range of people, has given him a unique perspective about what makes us tick.

Our brains are among the most complex objects in the universe, the things they can do are astounding. That said, the human brain evolved in much simpler times when our concerns were more straight forward – essentially finding something to eat, without being eaten ourselves. Now we worry about things like our career, deadlines, health and safety, Instagram followers … and finding fulfilment. Understanding how our stone-aged brains work in these smart phone times will help us take care of the squidgy lump of stuff inside our heads, ensuring we can thrive both mentally and physically.

The changing face of the working week

Andrew’s recent announcement of the four-day working week for Perpetual Guardian employees made headlines around the world when they sought to test its effect on productivity, engagement and employee wellbeing and stress.

Over eight weeks in March and April 2018, Perpetual Guardian experimented with a globally unprecedented form of a four-day week across the business. The remarkable point of difference: there was no compression of expected work schedules. or reduction in salaries. Andrew is now working with his board, HR team and consulting within the business on ways in which the four-day week can be implemented long-term.
