Top 10 spots for walking your pooch

All those pandemic pups are great motivation to get out and enjoy some fresh air and exercise.

Dogs aren’t just loveable companions – they’re also ideal for adding a little extra exercise to your day. So, try one of these dog-friendly spots the next time you feel like walking a little further than just around the block.

1. Auckland’s Botanic Gardens  

These large gardens are beautiful to explore and feature an off-leash area towards their northern end.

2. Kakamatua Inlet  

Nestled in Auckland’s Waitākere Ranges, this popular off-leash beach area is perfect for zoomies and chasing balls.

3Monte Cecilia Park  

This Auckland park is another beautiful spot to stretch the legs, with grassy hills ideal for dogs to run around on.

4. Tauranga’s Puketoki Scenic Reserve  

You can choose between a short loop track that takes approximately 20 minutes to walk or a longer loop that takes around an hour – but dogs do need to be kept on a leash.

5. Tawatawa Reserve  

This popular Wellington spot includes a large flat dog exercise area where your pet can run leash-free.

6. Camborne Walkway

While there are some on-leash restrictions on this Porirua walkway, it offers pretty views as you get in those steps.

7. Seton Nossiter Park 

This Wellington park is a large, safe place to exercise, with a mix of on-leash and off-leash areas.

Found in northeast Christchurch, this pine forest features dog-friendly tracks through the trees.

9Hagley Park 

The reserve has designated dog-friendly areas and is popular with dog owners in Christchurch’s city centre.

10Queenstown’s Mt Crichton Loop Track  

This loop track is 6.4km long but is an easy, well-formed track with stunning views – just be sure to keep your canine pal on a lead
