Terms and conditions – Free Puppy and Kitten Health Cover

  1. Eligibility:
    a. This giveaway of Free Puppy and Kitten Health Cover (the free giveaway) is available only to individual pet owners

    ii. who own puppies and kittens that are between 6 weeks and 20 weeks of age (inclusive);and

    ii. who own puppies that have been purchased from an NZKC registered breeder

    b. The free giveaway is not available to breeders or associations.
  2. Period of free giveaway:
    a. The free give-away commences on the date that your application is received by us, subject to our approval (the Commencement Date), and will expire on the day that is six weeks after the Commencement Date (the Expiry Date). You must submit any claims under this free give-away to us within 30 days of the Expiry Date. Claims submitted after this period or claims arising before the Commencement Date or after the Expiry Date will be declined;
    b. You are under no obligation to apply for a Southern Cross Pet Insurance policy. However if you elect to apply for an Southern Cross Pet Insurance policy to take effect before the Expiry Date, any ongoing treatment required will be covered under the free give-away benefits for the next 90 days, then full standard benefits of the selected policy will apply;
    c. If you elect to apply for an Southern Cross Pet Insurance policy after the Expiry Date, Southern Cross Pet Insurance will underwrite your policy with reference to your application and the facts that exist at the date of your application.
  3. Administration: This free giveaway is non-transferable and is not redeemable for cash. All decisions by us in relation to this free giveaway shall be final. All correspondence and claims must be sent to Southern Cross Pet Insurance, Private Bag 3240, Waikato Mail Centre, Hamilton 3240 or phone: 0800 800 836.
  4. Free giveaway terms and exclusions:
    a. Subject to the other terms, conditions and exclusions of the free giveaway, we will reimburse you for the costs of any medically necessary tests or treatment directly related to your pet’s injury or illness that are carried out in New Zealand between the Commencement Date and Expiry Date;
    b. Whether tests or treatment are medical necessary or not is at our entire discretion;
    c. We will pay up to a maximum sum of $3,000.00 (including GST) in aggregate for all valid claims accepted by us. For the avoidance of doubt, this means that our maximum liability to you under this free give-away is $3,00.00;
    d. You will pay the first $100.00 (including GST) of each claim made for each separate illness or injury;
    e. When making a claim, you will need to provide itemised original tax receipts and medical history notes that state a diagnosis and treatment and must not have been otherwise paid or reimbursed under another insurance policy;
    f. If you provide us with false or misleading information or make a false or misleading claim, your cover under this free giveaway will end immediately and we will not be responsible or liable for any claim or payment of any kind to you whatsoever;
    g. Any costs (whether incurred by us, you, your veterinarian or otherwise) in relation to providing further information for a claim made by you under this free giveaway will be met by you;
    h. You must take appropriate care of your pet and promptly arrange for any treatment recommended by your veterinarian to prevent injury or illness;
    i. We will not be responsible or liable for any claims, costs or losses of any kind relating to or as a consequence of:

    i.      any illnesses (including any related clinical conditions, signs or symptoms of illness) arising before or within 7 days of the Commencement Date;

    ii.     any injuries (including any related clinical conditions, signs or symptoms of injury) arising before the Commencement Date;

    iii.    any pet that is less than 6 weeks old or more than 20 weeks old at the Commencement Date;

    iv.     prophylactic or preventative tests or treatment;

    v.      tests, treatment or drugs that are not directly related to an injury or illness;

    vi.     general health improvers, all food (including prescription food and dietary supplements) and all parasite control (for ticks, fleas, mites, worms and similar) or any condition related to these parasites (including, but not limited to Demodectic mange);

    vii.    equipment (including, but not limited to Elizabethan collars);

    viii.   vaccinations or neutering;

    ix.     your acts or omissions (whether wilful, accidental, negligent or otherwise);

    x.      cremation, burial or postmortem;

    xi.     house calls or other visits and any travel costs relating to these;

    xii.    laboratory test courier costs;

    xiii.   extra costs for treating your pet outside normal surgery hours, unless your veterinarian advises that an emergency consultation is medically necessary;

    xiv.    the destruction of a pet pursuant to an order of the court or any law or regulation;

    xv.     natural disaster, war, riot, revolution or any similar event;

    xvi.    medical misadventure;

    xvii.   inherited or congenital defects;

    xviii.  Osteodystrophy;

    xix.    dentistry, unless as a direct result of an accident;

    xx.     cosmetic surgery of any kind (including, but not limited to dew claws, tail docking or tattooing);

    xxi.    Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) or parvovirus;

    xxii.   umbilical hernias; and

    xxiii. damage or injury to any person or property caused by you or your pet.

In these terms and conditions you/your means the owner of the pet notified to us in your application and we/us/our means Southern Cross Pet Insurance (which is a product and brand of Southern Cross Benefits Limited).

Privacy statement

How may Southern Cross use information about you and your pet?
You authorise us to use information about you and your pet for the following purposes:
  • to consider your pet’s eligibility for cover under the policy;
  • to consider the specific terms applying to the policy (including any pre-existing conditions);
  • to administer the policy;
  • to consider whether any qualifying treatment is eligible for cover under the policy;
  • to contact you from time to time, including within a reasonable time of your pet ceasing to be covered by the policy, with information about products and services relating to us, other ‘Southern Cross’ branded businesses, and our business partners;
  • to conduct analysis and research;
  • to compare with information about you held by our business partners, so we can provide you with information about relevant products and services relating to us or our business partners;
  • to process, investigate and review any claims made and or paid (including historical claims);
  • to prevent, detect and investigate any fraud including where in our reasonable opinion we suspect any fraud; and
  • to comply with laws and regulations.
Who may Southern Cross collect information about you and your pet from?
You authorise us to collect information about you and your pet for the above purposes, directly from:
  • you (e.g. via the application form and claim form);
  • your vet;
  • a previous Southern Cross Pet Insurance (formerly known as Ellenco) policy (including previous application(s), certificate(s) of insurance and or claims);
  • ‘Southern Cross’ branded businesses and our business partners; and
  • any other third party authorised by you.

You also authorise the disclosure of such information by such parties for any of the above purposes.

Who may Southern Cross disclose information about you and your pet to?
You authorise us to disclose information about you or your pet for the above purposes, directly to:
  • you;
  • your vet;
  • any third party authorised by you;
  • other ‘Southern Cross’ branded businesses and our business partners; and
  • any other party as required by law.

Is the information we hold about you and your pet secure?
We endeavour to protect your information from loss, unauthorised access, modification or disclosure and or misuse in accordance with the Privacy Act. Please note we may also record calls for training and audit purposes and for dispute resolution.
How can you access and correct your information?
You are entitled to have access to and request correction of any of your personal information held by us. Please contact us on 0800 800 836.
We endeavour to ensure that the information we collect, store, use or disclose is accurate, complete and up to date. Prompt notification of any changes to your contact details will help us to do this.
From time to time Southern Cross may send you marketing and other information electronically such as by email or text message. If you have provided your email address or mobile phone number we take this as your implied consent to us doing this. If you wish to withdraw your consent at any time please contact us.
If you do not provide us with your information, what then?
If the information provided to us is not accurate or complete we may not be able to process the application or claim, or it may result in us not being able to provide your pet with cover until accurate and complete information is provided. The consequences of providing incomplete, false or misleading information are set out in your policy document.
