Southern Cross North Harbour Hospital has opened a new ward to meet increased demand for orthopaedic and general surgeries in the area, and provide more quality care to residents.

Southern Cross Healthcare CEO Terry Moore said the new ward supports the organisation’s commitment to the North Shore community in helping to meet their healthcare needs.

“The increased capacity at Southern Cross North Harbour Hospital will offer patients more timely, high quality care; minimising wait times and getting patients back on their feet more quickly. The North Shore has a fast-growing population which is also ageing, so we’re pleased to add additional capacity to meet the demand,” he said.

The new ward adds another 10 patient rooms, eight single rooms and two double rooms, each with an ensuite, to the 70-bed facility.

The ward has been designed to allow for enhanced infection prevention. All surfaces are suitable for deep cleaning between patients. Thoroughfares are wider, and alcoves added, to allow for the safe and efficient flow of larger items including patient beds and mobile workstations.

A new nurse call system, which operates through personal pagers, provides significant noise reduction. This means that only emergency bells sound, helping to increase patient comfort.

Southern Cross Healthcare has Toitū Envirocare carbon reduction certification across its national network. To support its ongoing sustainability efforts, the new ward includes smart building technology that controls temperatures in individual rooms and reduces energy consumption when not in use.
