New North Shore Surgical Centre will offer orthopaedic treatment

Wednesday , 4 April 2018 by Campbell Gibson

A group of orthopaedic surgeons has teamed up with Southern Cross Hospitals in a joint venture to build a state-of-the-art day stay hospital in Milford on Auckland’s North Shore. The new facility will meet rising demand for high quality care in the area.

Construction on the three-storey building that will house North Shore Surgical Centre will start in April 2018, across the road from North Shore Hospital. It is expected to be completed, up and running by mid-2019.

The joint venture hospital will offer three operating theatres run by up to 30 staff.

Another medical facility is planned for the first level and a café on the ground floor.

Orthopaedic surgeon Tony Danesh-Clough says demand is increasing for high quality orthopaedic surgeries from the growing population of the North Shore.

“This day-stay hospital will focus on performing keyhole orthopaedic operations, using the very latest techniques and state-of-the art equipment,” explains Mr Danesh-Clough. “It will offer patients timely, high quality care, while minimising wait times and getting them back on their feet more quickly.”

Southern Cross Hospitals Chief Operating Officer Tau Loon Ho says the centre shows Southern Cross Hospitals’ commitment to the North Shore community.

“We are delighted to partner with this group of surgeons to create a new facility for the people of the North Shore, offering high quality surgeries to hundreds of people every year,” he says. “This new hospital will complement the range of specialties offered by our North Harbour campus.”

The population of the North Shore is among the fastest growing in the country. Its population is also ageing and joints problems are common among those aged over 50 years.

Award-winning architect firm Peddle Thorp is behind the design of the building, while veteran property developers Steve Walsh and John Duffin of Aspec Properties are bringing the project to life.

The building will mirror the design of the adjacent TRG Imaging building, which won Excellence in the Health and Medical Property category at the NZ Property Council’s annual awards in 2016.
