Southern Cross is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of Kiwi kids. We’ve joined with the Pause Breathe Smile charitable trust and the Mental Health Foundation to help equip New Zealand children with essential skills to navigate the ups and downs of everyday life as they grow.
Pause Breathe Smile with Southern Cross is a preventive mind health programme designed to set our kids up for a healthy future. It’s available free of charge to school kids aged five to 12 across New Zealand, thanks to funding from Southern Cross.
The programme has reached hundreds of schools and over 50,000children, boosting their wellbeing, conflict resolution skills and self-awareness, and reducing stress.
Funded by Southern Cross Healthcare, Pause Breathe Smile is our flagship social responsibility programme, and underpins our commitment to improving the mental resilience of Aotearoa New Zealand’s kids. It’s an important investment in the next generation of our tamariki, and we are incredibly proud of this partnership.
Our not-for-profit ethos and focus on health and wellbeing are a great fit with this proven mind health programme.

Our involvement makes it possible for Pause Breathe Smile to be available free of charge to any primary and intermediate school in the country.
If you would like your local school to offer the Pause Breathe Smile programme, or you’re interested in more information about how New Zealand’s tamariki can benefit from accessing mind health skills, please contact the Pause Breathe Smile team directly.
It’s important that all tamariki and whānau can access the benefits of building positive mind health skills.
Pause Breathe Smile offers free resources including guided mindfulness practices, videos and activities which can be used at home or in the classroom.
