Society Director roles 2019

Southern Cross Medical Care Society has commenced a process to identify suitably qualified individuals to fill two non-executive director vacancies that will arise at the end of this year. 

As a result of succession planning, the Board advertised in April to invite "expressions of interest" from candidates who have either:

1) the leadership attributes of a potential future Chair, or
2) a clinical background (ideally connected to the private elective surgery market).

In both cases, candidates must have proven governance experience appropriate to an organisation the size and nature of Southern Cross. Candidates will also meet threshold requirements as outlined in the Society’s Rules, Fit and Proper criteria set out in the Society’s Fit and Proper Policy, and Reserve Bank of New Zealand standards for directors of licensed insurers.

The expressions of interest period has now closed. The Board’s preferred candidate(s) will be identified by 1 September and endorsed by the Board for election at the Society’s AGM in November 2019.

Society Rules Consultation 2015

Thank you to those members who provided input to the Society's Rules consultation from 22 July to 27 August 2015.  Member submissions were considered by the Board and the updated Amended Rules were the subject of a Special Resolution that was passed at the Society's AGM on 1 December. Some of the Rules updates arose from recent law changes; others were intended to make the Rules simpler, more modern, and easier to understand. The new Rules were registered with the Registrar of Friendly Societies with effect from 17 December 2015.

Society Member Tenure Project 2012

This project was established as a result of two resolutions passed at the Society’s 2011 AGM to look into the subject of recognising members of long-standing.  The project commenced in March 2012 and concluded in August 2012. It encompassed member consultation, research, detailed data analysis and evaluation of possible discount models. The idea of providing premium discounts to members based on their length of membership was explored.  However, the project found that such a discount would not be equitable to all members and would be unsustainable for the Society so could not be pursued.  This outcome does not diminish the concern long-held by the Board and management about rising healthcare costs and the high cost of premiums for older members.
