Health technology application process

Monday, 9 November 2015 by Kelsey Fletcher

In the past two years, we assessed 26 health technology applications from a wide variety of surgical and non-surgical specialties. About one in three of the applications we assessed were approved and added to the cover we provide.

Our approach to assessing health technology is to ensure there is clinical benefit to our members, at an acceptable cost, and that the technology meets ourassessment guidelines.

We have developed these guidelines so there is a clear and consistent approach for reaching reimbursement decisions. Approved health technologies over the past two years include microwave ablation therapy of liver tumours, simple superficial vascular malformation sclerotherapy and embolization, contrain biofeedback and electrostimulation for faecal incontinence, and synthetic ligament repair and reconstruction. If you are intending to use a technology that we do not currently fund, please contact us to discuss coverage before applying for prior approval or recommending the technology to Southern Cross members.

Please phone Southern Cross on 0800 770 843, email or write to Health Technology Assessment Manager, Southern Cross Health Society, Private Bag 99934, Newmarket, Auckland 1149.
