The specialist team is made up of experienced colorectal and upper gastrointestinal laparoscopic surgeons and physicians, including Michael Booth, Stephen Burmeister, Mike Hulme-Moir, Eva Juhasz, John Perry and Russell Walmsley.
This experienced team of endoscopists brings a combination of clinical knowledge and advanced international training to the centre. All of our team is committed to the North Shore/Waitakere region and based at Waitemata Specialist Centre. Patients can access a wide range of services backed up by the resources of a fully equipped hospital, with full confidence in the safety, and depth of capability involved.
Our team-based approach offers benefits for patients presenting more complex cases and – should they require theatre admission or anaesthetic support – this can also be more easily dealt with within the hospital facilities.
All our specialists have had international training and our work – in private and public healthcare – makes for a complete service for Gastrointestinal and Liver problems. Clinical interests within the group include Endoscopy, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Coeliac disease, Gastro-oesophageal reflux, pH monitoring, Liver diseases, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Motility problems, Nutrition and Pill Camera Endoscopy.

Michael Booth
MICHAEL BOOTH managed his own general practice prior to completing his surgical training. His Post Graduate Surgical training was as Surgical Fellow at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (UK) as well as the foundation Surgical Fellow at Wakefield Surgical Clinic, Wellington. His special interests include Upper GI Endoscopy and Colonoscopy, laparoscopic weight loss surgery (including gastric bypass, adjustable banding and sleeve gastrectomy), laparoscopic Cholecystectomy and laparoscopic Antireflux surgery. Stephen Burmeister
STEPHEN BURMEISTER is a graduate of Auckland Medical School who completed post graduate specialty training at Addenbrookes’ Hospital, Cambridge, UK. His interests are in the treatment/management of IBD, IBS and upper GI pathology – including motility disorders, oesophageal manometry with 24-hour impedance pH studies and pill camera endoscopy.
Mike Hulme-Moir
MIKE HULME-MOIR is a graduate of Auckland University. He did post-graduate training in colorectal and upper GI surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He practises as a General and Colorectal Surgeon exclusively on the North Shore and is the Clinical Head of the Colorectal unit North Shore Hospital. Areas of expertise and special interest include Colorectal surgery (including IBD, cancer, benign disease, prolapse and incontinence), therapeutic endoscopy, colonoscopy, and laparoscopic surgery for colorectal disease. Eva Juhasz
EVA JUHASZ is a graduate of Auckland University and after training in General Surgery, she completed a Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery at the Mayo Clinic, USA. She is involved in both the public and private sector, managing both acute surgical patients and complex colorectal conditions including cancer. Her main interest is the surgical management of bowel cancer and she has been involved in trials in relation to the role of laparoscopic surgery for bowel cancer. View detailed Specialist Profile
John Perry
JOHN PERRY is a graduate of the Auckland Medical School who completed specialist training in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine in Auckland and the UK. He did fellowships in liver disease at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, and in inflammatory bowel disease at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, UK. He is an accomplished endoscopist with an interest in both upper and lower gastrointestinal disease, including irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease along with diseases of the liver.
Russell Walmsley
RUSSELL WALMSLEY is a graduate of the University of Bristol, England, and underwent specialty training in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine in the UK. His doctoral research is in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, undertaken at the Royal Free Hospital, London and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. His interests are in Endoscopic Ultrasound and Nutritional Support services, plus the management of inflammatory bowel disease.
