Going overseas?

Southern Cross members who are travelling overseas – for work or pleasure – can put selected health insurance plans ‘on hold’ for between 2 and 12 calendar months. Suspension of cover is available after 12 months of continuous cover and can be requested a maximum of three times per lifetime of membership on selected plans. There must be at least 12 months of continuous cover between each request.

To put your Southern Cross health insurance plan on hold, you need to make arrangements with us before you leave New Zealand.

  • Let us know that you’re going overseas for an extended period. Remember to include your membership number, your departure date and expected return date.
  • To reinstate your policy, you will need to contact Southern Cross within 30 days of returning to New Zealand. We will need to see proof of departure and re-entry, i.e. passport stamps or airline tickets.

Going overseas on secondment

If you belong to Southern Cross through your employer’s work scheme and are seconded overseas for work for more than two months, you may be eligible to request suspension of your Southern Cross policy. You will then retain your original date of joining and loyalty benefits.

  • Your employer needs to let us know in writing (on company letterhead) that you’re going to be working overseas. The letter needs to include your name, your membership number, and the start and finish dates of the overseas secondment.
  • To reinstate your policy, your employer will need to contact Southern Cross on your behalf within 30 days of returning to New Zealand.
