Waitakere principal nominated as NZ's most ardent netball supporter
5/20/2010 9:39:00 AM by Aimee Bourke

The principal of St Leonards Road School, Darren Smith, has been nominated as New Zealand's most ardent netball supporter for giving netball teams and players positive encouragement and help, caring for the health and wellbeing of teams, respecting the umpire's decisions and turning up regularly to support games.

This is in response to Southern Cross Health Society launching a hunt this netball season for New Zealand’s ‘healthiest’ netball supporter - aimed at encouraging and endorsing positive sideline behaviour.

Southern Cross Health Society CE, Mr Peter Tynan, says: “We love hearing about local good sorts in the community, and we hope that our healthy supporter promotion will help find more of them!

“Without supporters there is no game and netball is improving the health of New Zealanders by keeping people active – so we’re very proud to back the supporters!” says Mr Tynan.

Southern Cross is an official supporter of local netball at school and club level. The Healthy Supporter competition will reward dedicated netball supporters who give teams positive encouragement and help.

“The kind of supporters we want to hear about are those who encourage participation even when teams are losing, turn up regularly to games, bring healthy treats, respect the umpire’s decisions and help out with transport – fostering the community spirit.”

Players, coaches and parents have the opportunity to nominate ‘healthy’ supporters at www.mynetball.co.nz/healthzone. Everyone nominated will go into a major prize draw, drawn at the end of the netball season.

The winning healthy supporter’s family will win a return family trip to Auckland, tickets to an international netball game together with dinner, breakfast and a night at the Hyatt Hotel.

Mr Tynan says as New Zealand’s largest health insurer, and a not-for-profit, the organisation is committed to supporting netball as one of New Zealand’s most popular sports, keeping Kiwis fit and healthy.
